Volvo Penta Advances G17 Natural Gas Engine

Natural gas engines engineered to deliver scalable, lower emission power for data centers and utilities. Volvo Penta’s G17 engine brings fuel flexibility, high performance and a pathway toward a more resilient and low carbon energy future. With global energy demand rising rapidly, driven by data centers, utilities, and other mission critical sector, the requirement for dependable, scalable, and lower emission standby power continues to intensify. Volvo Penta’s latest natural gas engine has been developed to deliver consistent performance that grows alongside the needs of these expanding industries.

The G17 natural gas engine, designed as a gas fueled counterpart to Volvo Penta’s established D17 genset platform, marks a major milestone in the company’s ongoing transformation. It introduces fuel versatility, adaptable output, and a clear route toward a more resilient and lower carbon energy landscape. “There is no single solution to the energy transition. Multiple technologies and fuel options must progress together,” said Kristian Vekas, Product Manager for Industrial Power Generation at Volvo Penta. “The G17 broadens our power generation lineup with a gas powered alternative built to meet increasing global demand for reliable, lower emission systems supported by the Volvo Group’s strength and worldwide service network. It demonstrates our commitment to delivering purpose built solutions that help customers meet their evolving energy goals.”

Sharing its platform with the high performance D17, the G17 is a 17 liter, 6 cylinder, spark ignited engine capable of operating on both conventional pipeline grade natural gas and renewable natural gas. This dual fuel capability provides a practical pathway for customers seeking to reduce emissions without compromising the uptime and durability they rely on. Delivering approximately 450 kWe at 1800 rpm, the G17 provides strong output from a compact package. Its smaller enclosure helps reduce installation space and housing costs, while optimized load acceptance and rapid power delivery support reliable operation during grid fluctuations or sudden demand increases.

Pipeline Ready Natural Gas Performance

The G17’s compatibility with both pipeline quality natural gas and renewable natural gas offers a lower carbon alternative to diesel for applications where reliability, environmental performance, and operational resilience are essential. Its adaptable design enables direct connection to existing gas networks, simplifying installation and removing the need for additional fuel conditioning equipment.

“The G17 is built to achieve lower emissions without sacrificing capability,” Vekas added. “Its flexible fuel approach helps reduce carbon intensity while preserving the power density, responsiveness, and long term durability expected from Volvo Penta’s heavy duty engine family.”

Flexible and Cost Efficient Power

The G17 is engineered for reduced emissions, including NO and particulate matter. Advanced combustion management, low pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), a high efficiency three way catalyst, and compliance with U.S. EPA stationary regulations make it a strong option for organizations with ESG targets or strict air quality requirements.

The engine’s compact, stackable architecture is ideal for space restricted environments such as data centers. It can also be integrated into hybrid energy strategies that combine internal combustion engines with renewable fuels and battery storage. This modular approach enables operators to build adaptable systems that scale with future demand. Lower potential fuel costs compared with diesel and reduced noise output further support economic and community friendly operation.

Leveraging the Volvo Group’s proven automotive scale technology, the G17 benefits from platforms trusted worldwide in demanding heavy duty applications. With installation dimensions and cooling requirements aligned with the D16 and D17, the engine simplifies both new builds and retrofits. A clean component layout and fewer cylinders enhance serviceability and may help reduce total cost of ownership over the engine’s lifetime.

For Mission Critical Applications

Like all Volvo Penta power generation solutions, the G17 natural gas engine is backed by the company’s extensive global dealer network, focused on maximizing uptime, reliability, and long term performance.

“With the G17, Volvo Penta strengthens its ability to deliver integrated energy solutions that combine proven technology, emerging fuel pathways, and robust service support,” Vekas concluded. “This gives customers a dependable, scalable platform to advance their long term energy strategies.”
