Powering the future of scalable BESS platforms Volvo Penta is showcasing how a versatile battery foundation can serve as the backbone of an electrified ecosystem powering everything from industrial e-drivelines to mobile energy storage units. This vision is being demonstrated in Italy, where forklift specialist Fantuzzi Team Material Handling (FTMH) and energy storage innovator TecnoGen are jointly illustrating how Volvo Penta’s battery technology can drive an electric forklift while also supplying the energy system that keeps it charged.
Developed through a close engineering partnership, Volvo Penta collaborated with FTMH to create a modular electric driveline tailored to withstand the demanding, high intensity cycles of material handling operations.
“Our engineering team needed to design a next generation electric machine capable of meeting the performance expectations of our customers. By working alongside Volvo Penta, we adopted their electromobility platform as the foundation for our new electric driveline, purpose built for high capacity forklifts. This marks the beginning of the electrification journey for our full range of forklifts and empty container handlers,” explains FTMH technical director Eugenio Ponzini.
The modular architecture also positions FTMH for future upgrades as electric technologies evolve. Volvo Penta’s global support network was another decisive factor.
“We selected Volvo Penta not only for their technology but also for their extensive service network, which ensures our customers receive support wherever they operat, perfectly aligned with FTMH’s values,” adds Ponzini.
Designed for heavy duty environments the energy dense battery packs feature high energy density, liquid cooling, IP67 protection and rugged shock resistant construction. At the same time, TecnoGen is integrating Volvo Penta’s battery systems into its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) lineup, accelerating its move into clean, emissions free power solutions. This is the same proven battery energy storage technology used across Volvo Group trucks and construction equipment.
“The Volvo Penta BESS subsystem fits seamlessly into our energy platform, enabling us to deliver increasingly innovative solutions. This is why our BESS units are highly adaptable, suitable for charging stations, peak shaving applications, and many other use cases,” says TecnoGen plant manager Emanuele Rizzi.
During the joint demonstration, FTMH’s electric forklift was charged directly from TecnoGen’s Volvo Penta powered BESS, showing how a single battery platform can simultaneously energize machinery and support onsite power needs.
