key weather warnings and hazards...

Each year marine rescue and life saving organisations respond to thousands of calls for assistance from people in trouble along the coastline, on the ocean, or on inland waterways. Many of these incidents are caused by or made worse by the weather. Understanding the impact of weather hazards can help you be better prepared, or change your plans for safer conditions. Weather hazards vary and include Wind, Waves & Swell, Tides and a Change in Conditions. Checking the weather forecasts before you go out and while you are out on the water gives you the best chance to alter course or return to shore safely if the weather changes suddenly.

Bad weather can create a situation of heightened risk. If you plan to spend time on or near the water, learn about your local weather regimes and how a change in conditions can make the waterways rough in certain areas. Understanding the impact of weather hazards can help you be better prepared. If you are preparing to head out on the water, take note of forecasts indicating reduced visibility from fog or rain, or risks to safety and comfort from thunderstorms, lightning or squall conditions. Safe boating also means assessing the weather. Checking the weather and tides should be part of your safe boating management plan. Once out on the water always be prepared for weather conditions that can change very quickly.

With an extensive coastal shoreline, rivers and estuaries that cover over 1,000's of kilometres, here in Australia we are spoilt with an abundance of places to discover boating. When boating, the weather conditions on waterways can change very quickly. This is especially so on open waters like oceans and lakes. Find a waterside location that interests you and then start researching the tides, inlets and marinas.
