making electric off-road vehicles more accessible....

Volvo Penta Electric Off-Road Vehicle Solutions

Volvo Penta and Volvo Financial Services have introduced a joint financing approach designed to make the shift to electric off-road equipment more attainable for end users. DFDS, one of Northern Europe’s leading logistics and ferry operators, is the first to adopt the model, placing an order for six MOL 4x4 RoRo tractors equipped with Volvo Penta’s electric driveline technology.

A Tailored Pathway for Electrification

To support DFDS in its plan to convert a substantial portion of its 280 diesel terminal tractors to electric units, Volvo Penta and VFS have collaborated on a comprehensive leasing solution. The initial agreement covers a seven year lease for six MOL RME225 RoRo tractors powered by Volvo Penta electric drivelines, complemented by Volvo Penta service contracts for preventative maintenance and VFS insurance coverage.

The partnership brings together the strengths of both Volvo Group companies to create a complete package that helps customers invest confidently in electromobility as part of their long term transformation strategies.

“Leasing electric machinery is an appealing option for customers while the technology continues to evolve and upfront costs remain higher than traditional diesel equipment,” says Jeroen Overvelde, Area Sales Manager, Volvo Penta Industrial. “Now that this financial model is in place, we plan to extend it to additional markets, OEMs, and applications, helping accelerate the adoption of sustainable transport solutions and making electrification more accessible.”

Electric 4x4 RoRo Tractors

Volvo Penta and MOL, a specialist in heavy duty industrial and port equipment, began working together in 2021 to develop the world’s first operational electric 4x4 RoRo tractor. The prototype was delivered to DFDS’s Ghent terminal in Belgium, where it was integrated into daily operations for more than a year as part of real world validation.

“MOL and Volvo Penta are fantastic partners,” says Raf De Wit, Terminal Director at DFDS. “They listen closely to how we operate, understand our requirements, and work with us to refine the machines. We don’t see them as suppliers, they’re partners, and I believe they see us the same way.

“Their engineering teams asked what we needed, delivered it, and then came back asking how they could improve it further. That collaborative approach is essential, especially as we move into a new era of electrification.”

Electrifying 4x4 RoRo tractors offers significant advantages: lower emissions for improved air quality, reduced vibration, and quieter operation – all particularly beneficial in enclosed areas on and around vessels.

“This collaboration marks an important step toward cleaner and more efficient port operations,” says Conrad Verplancke, Sales Engineer for terminal tractors, port equipment, and special vehicles at MOL. “Customers appreciate that Volvo Penta provides the complete electric driveline package. They value the integrated design approach and the reassurance of Volvo Penta’s extensive service network.”

“Working with Volvo Penta is open and constructive. Even now that the tractors are in production, the support continues. We look forward to building on this partnership with future projects.”
