Volvo Penta is advancing toward the release of its new D13 IPS Hybrid propulsion system for the yacht market. This next generation hybrid electric platform is engineered to elevate onboard comfort while simplifying vessel design, installation and long term ownership. Building on the proven foundation of Volvo Penta IPS, the system marks a significant evolution in delivering a fully integrated helm to propeller solution. The D13 IPS Hybrid has been developed to reshape the yachting experience through quiet operation, intuitive handling and a uniquely cohesive system architecture. By unifying propulsion, electric motors, batteries, energy management and vessel controls into a single package, Volvo Penta reduces complexity for owners, captains, designers and builders alike.
At sea, captains can transition between electric, hybrid and crossover operating modes. In full electric mode, yachts can maneuver quietly at low speeds, dock with precision and anchor with minimal noise or vibration. This creates a more peaceful onboard environment where natural surroundings take precedence. High capacity batteries also support hotel loads without relying on a generator, enabling quieter nights at anchor and reduced emissions.
The D13 IPS Hybrid is compatible with HVO100, a renewable paraffinic fuel capable of reducing emissions by up to 90% compared with traditional diesel. The system also incorporates a compact aftertreatment solution that meets stringent IMO III emission standards.
A key innovation is the system’s fully integrated architecture. All components communicate through Volvo Penta’s Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), ensuring that hallmark features such as Joystick Driving, Assisted Docking, Autopilot and Glass Cockpit function seamlessly across all propulsion modes. This integration enhances precision during low speed maneuvers and tight docking while maintaining a consistent, intuitive user experience.
