Although not the standalone solution for reducing global CO2 emissions, Volvo Penta have proven that paraffinic renewable fuel sources like hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) are able to play a meaningful role in helping reduce fossil fuel reliance. This is particularly true of many privately owned leisure boats, which, unlike car and truck engines, are unable to be easily converted to some of the new and emerging electric energy technology systems. This is primarily due the limiting size and weight of the batteries required to power many larger boats over a meaningful distance.
