Ever wondered what is BESS or what powers a BESS subsystem with its nine-component architecture and flexible configurations? Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) enhance grid reliability, capacity, and resilience by storing and delivering energy. Volvo Penta’s energy-dense BESS subsystems are engineered to empower OEMs to build transportable, high-performance solutions that support the energy transition.
Volvo Penta’s BESS subsystems are purpose-built for OEMs developing mobile and stationary energy storage solutions. These subsystems deliver efficiency, reliability, and future-ready performance, backed by Volvo Penta’s advanced emission technologies and global dealer network. The Volvo Group leads in battery innovation, leveraging its legacy in heavy-duty applications to meet the highest safety and performance standards. Their global investments in battery cell and pack manufacturing ensures scalable production capacity.
1. Cube Battery Pack
Featuring a high energy density and favorable C-rate, this compact battery pack enables fast charge/discharge cycles. It supports both stationary and mobile BESS configurations, adapting to evolving energy strategies.
2. Battery Management System (BMS)
Built on Volvo’s electromobility platform, the BMS protects battery health, maintains optimal State of Charge (SoC), and optimizes charging cycles. It includes cybersecurity features and integrates seamlessly with OEM energy management systems and SCADA infrastructure.
3. DC/DC Converter
This unit steps down battery voltage (600 V to 24 V) to power auxiliary systems. It ensures subsystem functionality even in off-grid or mobile scenarios, supporting battery cooling and system startup.
4. Monitoring System Telematics Gateway Features
- Battery metric tracking (SoC, SoH, temperature, voltage)
- Remote performance optimization
- Cellular/Wi-Fi/Ethernet data transmission
- Fault detection and alerts
- System analytics for efficiency and longevity
5. Thermal Management System
Designed for harsh environments, this system includes pumps, radiators, active cooling, and heaters. It maintains battery performance across temperature extremes for efficient energy flow.
6. Electrical Safety
Safety components include HVIL monitoring, junction boxes, fuses, contactors, and isolation monitoring. All live components are sealed and monitored to ensure safe energy handling.
7. DC Interface
Adapted from Volvo Group standards, this interface ensures proper load handling and connects to the OEM inverter. It supports cable sizing and functional safety between the BESS and OEM busbar.
8. CAN Interface
Using the J1939 protocol, this interface communicates system status and faults to the OEM controller. It enables fine-tuning and performance optimization across the BESS.
9. OEM Scope
OEMs manage the AC side of the BESS, including converters, transformers, switchgear, and container shells. Volvo Penta’s subsystem covers the DC side: batteries, BMS, safety systems, converters, thermal management, and interfaces.
