Earlier this month, two new hybrid crew transfer vessels (CTVs) – MHO Asgard and MHO Apollo, were put through their paces in Esbjerg, Denmark. Having traveled from AFAI Southern Shipyard in China, the 12,000 nautical mile voyage was the ultimate sea trial for Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron. Danfoss Editron and Volvo Penta treated the journey as a pilot project and a time to work with the captains and crew to field test different power combinations, such as diesel-electric operation or diesel-only. Measuring 34.4 meters in length and with an 11-meter beam, these vessels will be run by operator MHO-Co and service the Hornsea Project 2 offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
Made to move with the elements, through grace, respect and ingenuity, Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron worked to design and reimagine existing systems. With state of the art batteries installed in Denmark, this system will allow the vessels to operate in zero-emission electric mode for up to eight hours. Using multiple modular generators allows operators to tailor power generation to the operational profile and enhance flexibly. " These systems are a very important first step towards the future of sustainable operations at sea,” says Mik Henriksen, CEO of MHO-Co. “We believe it is our shared responsibility to drive more sustainable solutions in the marine sector, and the best way to do this is through collaboration.”
