An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon - EPIRB, is an electronic device that, when activated in a life threatening situation, assists rescue authorities in their search to locate those in distress. A Personal Locator Beacon - PLB, is generally smaller and easier to transport than other beacons, and are designed to be worn or carried by an individuals rather than the vessel or vehicles.
PLBs are not a substitute for EPIRBs as defined by State and Territory marine carriage regulations. With limited exclusions, mariners in South Australian waters must carry an approved distress beacon. This beacon must be compliant, current and registered with AMSA.
