Improper wiring or a defective electrical device can cause a process called “electrolysis” which can set off corrosion. When dissimilar metals are immersed in an electrolyte (example saltwater) this can generate an electrical current in much the same way as a fluid battery. This can cause “galvanic corrosion” while rust, or more accurately “oxidation”, results from oxygen combining with exposed metals to form an oxide which becomes acidic.
Unfortunately, the problem, of corrosion can only limited, not prevented. It is important that issues with corrosion be addressed as part of a regular maintenance schedule. As a minimum, when your boat and outboard or inboard engines are serviced, do an inspection of the sacrificial anodes. Other limiting treatments includes inhibiting applications such as Volvo Penta Neutra-Salt.
