Ems Maritime Offshore (EMO) earlier this year held a naming ceremony for Windea One - a Volvo Penta powered hybrid crew transfer vessel (CTV) for the offshore wind industry. Built by Penguin International, Windea One is 32 m long with a breadth of 10 m and has a draft of almost 2 m. The vessel is the first CTV in the world to utilise the new Volvo Penta parallel hybrid system together with Volvo Penta IPS propulsion. EMO has chartered the vessel to windfarm developer and operator Ørsted for deployment between the European mainland and the North Sea.
Able to be operated in an all-electric mode the CTV can achieve a maximum speed of 28 knots and can be operated purely electrically for up to six hours. The vessel can accommodate four 10-ft containers or two 20-ft containers on the foredeck. In addition to the innovative drive system, the new design has an active fender system which enhances safety when technicians are transferring to and from the vessel to a turbine.
